COMPACTOR BINS (POSTED 8 AUG)

Colchester City Council and West Mersea Town Council have partnered to install four solar-powered smart bins in West Mersea.
Each 120-litre bin has a number of features that make them more efficient and effective at managing litter. A special compacting feature will allow them to hold over five times more rubbish than a standard bin, while a fill indicator will tell council operatives when they need emptying. The bins are equipped with 24/7 LED lighting, a personalised display that encourages people to dispose of their rubbish in the bin, and a foot pedal that allows users to open the bins without touching the cover.

This is one of several new approaches to tackling litter being extended across the city as part of the council's commitment to making Colchester a cleaner, greener, and more pleasant place to live and visit.

The new bins, along with several barbeque firepits (for disposing of BBQs) have been installed along Victoria Esplanade.
Residents can report issues with littering, fly-tipping, and graffiti on the Colchester City Council's website: click here

SCHOOL COUNCIL VISIT

On 16th October, pupils representing Mersea Island School visited the Council Office to meet with Mayor Cllr Sophie Weaver and other members of the Council. The children formed part of the School Council, representatives from each classroom throughout the years sat around the Chambers table and asked the Mayor questions, some about the role of Councillors, others personal. The children had the opportunity to try on the Mayor's chain too!

This Council will be continuing its engagement with the school children. We have asked them to run a competition to come up with new phrases for the Compacta (talking) bins, Mersea Island School Eco-Warriors were very enthusiastic.
